The Sokoban playbook
Choose a round of Sokoban and settle into its rules. Push every crate onto a target. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.
Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.
An idea for your next attempt
Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Notice the feedback after each input.
Understand the aim
Push every crate onto a target. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.
The order of play
- Move through empty floor.
- Push one crate into empty space.
- Never pull or push two at once.
- Undo a deadlock and continue.
How to interact with the game
Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.
A closer look at one example
A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.
Pay attention to this rule
Consider the player’s access behind crates. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
